Dhaka lacks visionary urban planning: Minister

Dhaka city has long been facing numerous problems for lack of visionary urban planning, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said on Sunday. “Urban planners are unable to predict how much the city will expand during a particular period. That’s why Tejgaon industrial area is now located in the middle of the city,” he told a workshop at Rajuk auditorium in Dhaka. The Dhaka Improvement Trust (DIT) was established in 1956 with a plan to accommodate around 2.5 million (25 lakh) people, said the Housing Minister adding that about two crore people are living in the capital. The minister said the city dwellers are now unhappy Rajuk activities. “So, the service activities of Rajuk (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) are going to be brought under an automation programme to remove people’s dissatisfaction.” Earlier, a tripartite MoU was signed aiming to expand the automation programme of Rajuk and increase its services. Access to Information (a2i) programme of Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and Rajuk signed the memorandum of understanding.
Director General of Prime Minister’s Office Sheikh Yusuf Harun, joint secretary of the ministry Rahmat Ullah M Dastagir and Rajuk member Abdur Rahman signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides, according to UNB.
