Debutant Durdanto Dhaka had an impressive start to their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) journey, defeating defending champions Comilla Victorians by five wickets on Friday, reports UNB.
With Dhaka's victory, the new season of BPL commenced at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city.
Dhaka won the toss and chose to field, restricting Victorians to 143 for six in 20 overs.
Imrul Kayes contributed 66, and Towhid Hridoy added 47 runs for the Victorians. Shoriful Islam stole the limelight with his maiden hat-trick in the last three balls of the innings.
Shoriful claimed three wickets, while Taskin Ahmed took two for Dhaka.
In response, Dhaka successfully chased the target of 144 with five wickets and four balls in hand.
Mohammad Naim and Danushka Gunathilaka's 100-run partnership in the first wicket set the stage for Dhaka's victory. Naim scored 52 off 40 balls, while Danushka contributed 41. Irfan Sukkur added 24 runs.
For Comilla, Tanvir Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman took two wickets each, but their efforts fell short of avoiding defeat.
The first match of BPL witnessed nearly a full-house spectators at the stadium.
BSS adds: defending champions Comilla Victorians captain Liton Das looked unfazed by his side's five-wicket defeat to Durdanto Dhaka as he said luck favours their coach Mohammad Salahuddin if the side taste a defeat in the first match of the BPL.
Under the guidance of Salahuddin, Comilla emerged as the most successful team of BPL, winning the trophy four times.
"I was talking to Sir (Salahuddin, the coach of Comilla Victorians), the other day. He said that generally we lose the first match. He also said if we lose the first game, it will be lucky for him," Liton said after the match.
In the last season, Comilla lifted the trophy despite losing the first three matches in a row.
However since it is his first match as Comilla captain after replacing the side's most successful captain Imrul Kayes, Liton feels little bad.
"Every defeat is difficult pill to swallow. Being captain for the first time, I would like to win the first match," he added.
On a pitch, that looked good for batting, Comilla Victorians piled up 143-6, a score that Durdanto Dhaka overhauled with three balls to spare. That the match went to the last over is due to a superb spell of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman.
Liton found a positive thing in bowling, saying that the bowlers showed their strength to keep the side in good stead despite the defeat.
"Even with below par total, our bowlers showed their strength and took the game to the last over," he said.
