Dhaka may face hotter summer next year

Thursday, 5 October 2023

FE REPORT
Dhaka is expected to face a hotter summer next year as greenery and water bodies disappear amid the growing number of concrete structures being built in the city, according to experts and academics.
Underscoring coordinated initiatives, Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center Bangladesh Chief Heat Officer Bushra Afreen talked about adaptation as much as possible and finding ways of mitigation.
The topic came to the fore at a roundtable discussion organised by the Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS) and Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARSIK) at the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) on Wednesday.
The discussion was titled 'Rising Temperature in Urban Areas: Causes and Solutions'. Member of Parliament Khodeza Nasreen Akhter Hossain addressed the event as the chief guest.
Prof M Shahidul Islam, chairman of the Department of Geography and Environment at Dhaka University, emphasised on adaptation as he said tree felling and filling up existing ponds should be stopped.
