Dhaka-Mymensingh highway blocked

Saturday, 8 March 2014

Supporters of an Awami League 'rebel' upazila parishad chairman candidate blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur to protest his alleged detention by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Sreepur Police Station OC Amir Hossain said traffic came to a halt on the highway from around 3:00 pm Friday after supporters of Telihati union parishad chairman Abdul Jalil, who is also a member of the ruling party's upazila unit, began protesting. He said thousands of Jalil's supporters took to the streets following the rumour of his detention by RAB. The blockade caused a nearly 15 kilometre-long congestion on both sides of the road, said Maona Highway Police Station OC Sanwar Hossain. -- bdnews24.com
