Dhaka proposes direct road link with Myanmar, Thailand

Saturday, 30 August 2008

Bangladesh has proposed direct road links with Myanmar and Thailand, reports UNB.

Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, who is now in India to join the 10th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting, made the proposal Friday during his meetings with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Nyan Win and Thai Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag, said a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs back in Dhaka.

The statement said currently Bangladesh is helping build a road linking it with Myanmar.

It was proposed that the road could also be connected with the planned Myanmar-Thailand highway.

"It will also provide access to China. Eventually four countries, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and China, could be thereby inter-connected," the statement said.

Speaking to reporters later, Iftekhar said: "This is still at a very initial stage of the thought process. Bangladesh will immensely benefit from a road leading to the East, particularly to China and the ASEAN. There seems to be a growing interest of these countries in this idea, which is good for us."
