Dhaka records highest temperature in 54 yrs

The capital city of Dhaka recorded its hottest day in 54 years on Thursday as mercury soared to 40.2 degrees Celsius. Earlier, the highest temperature recorded in Dhaka was 42.3 degrees Celsius on April 30, 1960, according to Met office. Meanwhile, country’s highest temperature 42.4 degrees Celsius was recorded on Thursday in Jessore while the lowest 19.7 degrees in Srimangal. The mercury is likely to soar further as there is no sign of rainfall, said Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist at the Met office. He also said temperature reached the highest 39.6 degrees Celsius in Dhaka in 2009 before recoding 40.2 degrees today. Asked about the highest-ever temperature recorded across the country, the meteorologist said it was 45.1 degrees in Rajshahi in 1972. Severe heat wave that is sweeping over the regions of Dhaka, Tangail, Faridpur, Rajshahi, Iswardi, Khulna, Mongla, Jessore and Chuadanga and moderate to mild heat wave that sweeping elsewhere over the country may continue, said Met office. Day and night temperature may also rise slightly over the country, according to a news agency
