FE REPOPRT | Saturday, 20 April 2024

Firefighters managed to douse the fire that broke out at the Dhaka Shishu Hospital on Friday afternoon after around one hour's efforts.
At least five units of Fire Service rushed to the hospital and succeeded in extinguishing the blaze at 2.39pm, Talha Bin Zasim, an official of the media cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, told the FE.
The extent of damage in the fire that erupted at 1.47 pm could be known after an investigation, said the official adding that so far no casualties were reported.
The fire that originated from the fourth floor, that houses the Cardiac Department, created widespread panic among patients and their relatives, forcing many to evacuate the hospital building.
Three firefighting units from the Mohammadpur Fire Station went to the scene when the fire was reported. A unit from Siddique Bazar and another from Tejgaon joined in the efforts to bring the blaze under control.
The fire sparked from a short circuit of an air conditioner in the ICU of the Cardiac Department, said the official. Anxiety spread among the patients and their relatives when the fire broke out. Many left the building with their sick children.
Hospital Director Dr Jahangir Alam said, "A fire started on the B Block's fourth floor, but it is now under control. Each floor on the B Block has an ICU. There was an ICU where the fire started. We moved our patients."
