Dhaka stocks gained moderately Thursday with the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) benchmark index crossing the 2900-mark for the first time in two weeks.
The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN) finished at 2914.53 with a gain of 16.03 points or 0.55 per cent, lifted by energy and pharma sector issues.
Beginning in an upbeat mood, the market was in the negative territory for a brief period just after half an hour into the trade on profit taking. After that, some positive financial disclosures drove the market upward.
The broader All Shares Price Index (DSI) closed at 2,441.31 with a slight rise of 12.36 points while the DSE 20 blue chip index lost 3.54 points to end at 2,222.01.
The turnover continued to rise as it stood at Tk 6.55 billion on the day, up by 12 per cent from the previous session's Tk 5.85 billion.
The most notable gainers on the day were the energy sector issues.
"The market behaviour indicated that the investors were eagerly awaiting the yearly results from the companies in this sector," said Equity Partners Ltd, an investment bank, in its daily market analysis.
Samorita Hospital posted the highest gain of 14.99 per cent on the day.
Most of the banks, non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) and insurance sector issues lost. Most of the issues in other sectors also lost slightly.
But most of the mutual funds gained as investors might have eyed the upcoming large initial public offerings (IPOs), said the EPL.
Of all banks, the state-owned Rupali Bank gained the highest 7.3 per cent.
In the pharmaceutical sector, the country's leading drug maker Square Pharma gained while its nearest rival Beximco Pharma lost.
The multinational company Reckitt Benckiser gained 15 per cent following its impressive corporate declaration.
The country's leading industrial conglomerate Beximco Ltd was the top turnover leader with shares worth Tk 466.78 million traded, followed by AIMS First Mutual Fund with Tk 387.91 million, Titas Gas Tk 383.75 million, Bextex Tk 364.97 million, Summit Power Tk 243.98 million and Beximco Pharma Tk 192.32 million.
