Dhaka stocks slightly up amid price fluctuation

Dhaka stocks finished slightly higher Tuesday in trading that saw fluctuation in share prices.
Trading at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) began in an upbeat mood with the key index rising more than 18 points in the first one and a half hours of trade. Later, it started to shed some points on profit taking.
The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN) closed at 2611.94 with a slight rise of 5.88 points. The All Shares Price Index (DSI) finished at 2173.76 with a meagre rise of 4.28 points and the DSE-20 blue chip index at 2132.83 with a drop of 5.88 points.
Out of a total of 262 issues traded, 136 gained, 120 declined and six remained unchanged.
The day's total turnover marginally increased to Tk 3.87 billion against the previous day's Tk 3.85 billion while the market capitalisation remained steady at Tk 1.00 trillion.
Share prices of the S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited, the top gainer and also the turnover leader, registered 20 per cent rise on the news that the board of directors of the company has recommended 17 per cent cash dividend for the year ended on September 30, 2008 and decided to issue one rights share for every two shares.
In addition, the board also decided to set up a medium size power generation plant in Chittagong by formation of a company under the name and style of S Alam Power Generation Limited. S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Ltd. will hold 70 per cent equity of the power company.
S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited was the turnover leader Tuesday with shares worth Tk 243.52 million traded.
The next other turnover leaders were Shinepukur Ceramics Limited, NBL, Beximco Pharma, Beximco, Titas Gas, EHL, Summit Power, BATBC and Aftab Auto.
