Dhaka verifying Ashequr\\\'s whereabouts
Saturday, 4 April 2015
The foreign ministry and its mission in Ankara are not sure if Ashequr Rahman had left Dhaka for Turkey to join Islamic State (IS) jihadists in Syria, reports bdnews24.com.
The 21-year-old student of Dhaka's Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) made headlines in Bangladesh by not returning as scheduled.
Media, citing diplomatic sources, suggested that he had crossed the Turkish border to join IS in Syria.
But Bangladesh embassy in Ankara confirmed to the news agency that they had no such information.
"His family in Dhaka informed government agencies that their son had not returned. Later we were asked to check," an embassy spokesperson told the news agency.
"We wrote to the Turkish authorities a month ago but did not get any reply. We even talked to them a week back, but they could not give us any information".
