Dhaka WASA move to clean city canals

Friday, 5 December 2014

Dhaka WASA has taken a move to clean city canals and box culverts to ensure smooth flow of water aiming to keep Dhaka city free from water-logging and urban flooding, reports UNB.
The 'Urban Dredging Demonstration Project (UDDP)' under the Water Operators Partnership (WOP) between Dhaka WASA and Vitens Evides International (VEI), Netherlands, is now cleaning Agargaon Canal by using two types of floating bulldozers.
A demonstration of the dredging programme was held on the bank of the Agargaon canal Wednesday. Dhaka WASA managing director Engr Taqsem A Khan inaugurated the demonstration programme while Resident Project Manager of UDDP Taco de Vries and Project Director Zaki Mostafa Chowdhury were present on the occasion.
During a period of six (6) weeks, the project is demonstrating the functions of the Dutch equipment and is training the Dhaka WASA staff in operating the machines.
Based on the water logging experience in the Netherlands, Dhaka WASA and VEI started the dredging demonstration project to help Dhaka WASA keep the drainage systems functioning.
Dhaka WASA will continue the programme for next 10 years to keep the city free from water logging.
