Dhaka\\\'s road link with Barisal, Madaripur disrupted
Monday, 21 July 2014
The 24-hour bus strike, enforced by Dhaka Inter-district Bus Owners’ Association, demanding a cut in compensation money to be paid to the families of the victims of a bus crash in Wazirpur upazila , continued on Dhaka-Barisal and Dhaka-Madaripur highways on Monday. Due to the strike, Dhaka’s road link with Barisal, Madaripur and some other southern and south-western districts remained disrupted, causing immense suffering to the commuters, especially Eid passengers. No long-route bus plied the routes since after the strike started in the morning; but other vehicles – trucks and auto-rickshaws – moved as usual. On July 12, twelve people were killed and at least 30 others injured as a bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ ploughed through a crowd near a local market on the Barisal-Dhaka Highway in Wajirpur upazila. A case was filed in connection with the accident, according to a news agency.
