Dhanmondi power sub-station goes out of order

Wednesday, 21 November 2007

FE Report
Several parts of Dhaka city witnessed frequent disruptions to power supply Tuesday due to shutdown of a major sub-station as the authorities were struggling to repair the damage in the system caused by Thursday's cyclone.
Sources said business activities as well as the normal public life were badly affected in areas like Segunbagicha, Paribagh, Paltan, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Azimpur due to power supply disruption for longer period on the day.
"The DESA's Dhanmondi electricity sub-station is now completely out of order as both of its transformers have remained closed since Friday afternoon," a senior DESA official told the FE.
He said the repair of the transformers might take two more days and they are likely to be reactivated Thursday afternoon next.
As a consequence of the failure of Dhanmondi sub-station, the DESA (Dhaka Electric Supply Authority) is supplying only one-third of the total electricity requirement in the affected areas.
"We are supplying electricity to the Dhanmondi sub-station areas from the nearby sub-stations," said the DESA official.
The DESA is now resorting to load shedding in most of the areas.
"We are now trying to repair the transformers," said a DESA official adding, "An amount of Tk 50 million is required to purchase a similar type new transformer."
Tuesday's countrywide electricity generation during daytime was around 2,500 megawatt (MW) and it was expected that it might reach 3,400 MW in the evening.
The Power Division earlier said power generation will be fully restored across the country by November 30 next.
