The world's biggest air freighter DHL Global Forwarding will break into the Bangladesh market eyeing the opportunity to transport the country's apparel items to the export destinations, people familiar with the development said Sunday.
The company, which has already established a joint venture with a local cargo group, will also set up a multi-million dollar warehouse and inventory facility in the country for smoothening exports and imports of textiles and clothing.
Its parent group DHL is the world leader in the logistics business which had an annual turnover of 63 billion (6,300 crore) euro in 2007. In addition to air freight, DHL Global Forwarding remains the global market leader in both air and ocean freight.
"It's a huge opportunity. The company wants to cash in on Bangladesh's growing apparel exports," an official at the local partner said.
The move by the German company, a sister concern of DHL, came after it expanded its footprint into Thailand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - Bangladesh's major rivals in the global garments trade.
The people said the company has already forged partnership with Dhaka-based Trade Clippers Cargo Ltd (TCCL), an air and shipping freighting agent, to facilitate the shipment of garments and textiles items.
Bangladesh's apparel exports grew by a healthy 15.4 per cent to reach US$ 12.35 billion in the fiscal year ended on June 30, 2009. The country earned $10.67 billion in the year before.
The exports figure is significantly higher given the negative impact of global recession when shipment from its major competitors such as China, India, Pakistan and Vietnam dropped.
"With space reserved on the world's leading commercial airlines, DHL Global Forwarding provides maximum flight flexibility and a complete schedule of delivery options to meet time and price sensitive demands," its website said.
An official at Trade Clippers said Amadou Diallo, South Asia and Pacific head of DHL Global Forwarding, would arrive in the city on January 26 to unveil the company's investment plan, first of its kind in Bangladesh.
"Bangladesh is now a leading exporter of apparel and textiles items in the world. And for the company, it's an ideal selection," the official told the FE.
"For many, outsourcing the non-core activities to a third-party specialist makes good strategic sense," he added.
Meanwhile officials said the company's South Asian and Pacific heads will hold talks with top government and private officials to materialise the investment plans.
The DHL Global Forwarding consists of approximately 3.0 million square metres of warehouse space strategically located on every continent, supported by its unparalleled computer systems and professionals trained in all areas ranging from picking and packing to light assembly.
In 1997, DHL Global Forwarding launched its global warehouse management system called LOGIS-WMS, which takes full advantage of bar code and radio frequency data input.
Founded in 1984, Trade Clippers Cargo Ltd has steadily become one of Bangladesh's largest freight service providers.
Since its inception, Trade Clippers has maintained overseas network partnership with DHL Global Forwarding.
