Dialogue aims at reaching nat

Thursday, 5 June 2008

Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed said Wednesday though being held bilaterally the main objective of the dialogue is to reach a national consensus on some important issues, reports BSS.

Quoting the Chief Adviser's assertion, Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said this at a joint press conference at the Chief Adviser's Office (CAO) after a dialogue with Bangladesher Somajtantrik Dol (BSD).

A seven-member BSD delegation led by its convener Khalequzzaman took part in the dialogue with the government held at the CAO.

Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed was present in the talks.

The commerce adviser said the BSD has proposed revision of some provisions of the constitution with a view to eradicating "inconsistencies" with affairs of the government.

The adviser said the constitution could be reviewed through forming a committee and all stakeholders should reach a consensus on the issue.

He said preparations are now underway to hold dialogue between the government and different professional groups, local government representatives, women and workers fora, media and indigenous communities even at regional level.

He said the ultimate objective of the ongoing dialogue is to increase people's involvement in the process to attain beneficial results on some important issues. Referring to various demands raised by the BSD to remove "inconsistency" in the constitution and governance, he said national consensus could be achieved to form a committee to review the constitution to remove disparities, if any.

"We can achieve a national consensus to review the constitution and the next elected government can take steps to this end," he added.

Describing the dialogue with the BSD as candid and fruitful, Dr Hossain said new things and ideas are coming out from every single talk.

Replying to a question, he said the ongoing dialogue with the political parties and expected talks with different stakeholders will continue simultaneously.

Speaking at the press briefing, the BSD convener said the spirit of the War of Liberation and the mass demands raised during the autocratic regime in 1990 can be the focal point of national consensus.

Referring to the state of emergency, he said it should be lifted for holding elections in a peaceful and credible manner.

"The state of emergency should be lifted to ventilate people's opinion in true sense,' he told the talks.

Dr Hossain further said the government will hold next dialogue with the Islamic Oikyo Jote at the CAO next Tuesday.
