Different organisations gear up relief activities

Different national and international organisations started vigorous relief activities for SIDR victims at the cyclone-affected areas in the country.
Different universities: The teachers and students of the universities as well as colleges under national university started massive relief operation through preparation of dry food, collecting clothing and medicines for the hurricane Sidr victims in southern parts of the country.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Univer-sity started massive relief activities at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) through receiving different relief goods and making them ready to be sent to the cyclone-hit areas by helicopters.
Over 200 volunteers from DU unit of Bangladesh National Cadet Corps and Badhan, a university-based blood donation organisation, taking part in the relief activities round the clock under the supervision of DU Central Relief Operation Committee. Provost of Amar Ekushe Hall of the university Professor Akhtar Hosain Khan has been coordinating the relief activities.
Meanwhile, the student and teachers of other public universities also started relief activities through different forms and started sending relief materials to the cyclone-hit people.
BDPC: Bangladesh Deve-lopment Partnership Centre (BDPC), a nongovernment organisation (NGO), will distribute cash money, food and clothes of Tk 2.8 million among the cyclone victims of Bagerhat district.
The German donor agency Misereor is assisting BDPC for its relief operation with 30,000 euros, a press release of the NGO said today.
Bangladesh Scouts: Members of the Bangladesh Scouts today distributed relief materials ,including, water purification powder and oral saline (ORS) among the cyclone-hit people of 22 south and southeastern districts of the country.
The relief goods include 249,000 packets of water purification powder and 80,000 packets of oral saline (ORS), a press release said here today.
The members of the Bangladesh Scouts are also working to prepare 100,000 packets of ORS for distributing among the affected, it added.
Besides, the Bangladesh Scouts, with the help of UNDP, distributed 10,800 pieces of tents among the affected areas of Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts and 25,000 kilos of 'chira' and 5,000 kilos 'ghur' among the 5,000 families of Kathalia, Rajapur, Nalchiti, Jhalokhati Sadar of Jhalokhati districts.
DMC: Department of Mass Communication (DMC) has distributed relief materials among 300 cyclone-hit families in nine villages under Kolapara in Patuakhali district.
According to a DMC press release, the relief materials included rice, pulse, salt, clothes and family kits.
The villages are Purba Hazipur and Pashchim Hazipur, Dariapur, Sadarpur, Majidbaria, Jalalpur, Akkelpur, Haldhibaria and Syedpur.
BRAC: Over 44,000 regular staff members of BRAC have contributed a total of Tk. 7.0 million from their salary for BRAC's cyclone relief operations.
To date, BRAC's cyclone relief operations have been able to reach the remotest regions of the worst-affected areas and have distributed emergency relief items to more than 0.3 million victims from over 60,000 households in Bagerhat, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Gopalganj, Jhalokathi, Khulna, Madaripur, Patuakhali, Pirojpur and Shariatpur districts.
Over 2,500 BRAC officials-employees positioned at the affected areas are distributing relief packets containing rice (10 kg), biscuits (2 packets), lentil (1 kg), matches (2 boxes) and Tk. 200 in cash.
Thirteen BRAC medical teams are also providing emergency medical care to victims in the Barisal, Barguna, Khulna, Bagerhat and Patuakhali districts and to date have treated over 5,500 patients. Alongside, BRAC medical officials are also working with 116 government medical teams in other areas.
BRAC began emergency relief operations immediately after the cyclone, initially contributing Tk. 70 million from its own resources and is currently seeking donations from home and abroad to support the expansion of relief operations.
