FE Report | Monday, 10 November 2014

The Digital Centre Entrepreneurs' Conference will be held in the capital tomorrow (Tuesday) to encourage root level ICT-based entrepreneurs and to increase interaction among them.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the gala event at the National Parade Ground as the chief guest, while PM's Information and Communication Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy will deliver the inspiring speech at the programme.
State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak disclosed the information at a press conference at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Sunday.
Access to Information (a2i) project director and the PMO Director General Kabir Bin Anwar, among others, was present at the briefing.
The junior minister said the government will hold the conference to observe the 4th anniversary of the much-hyped Union Digital Centres (UDCs). Around 11,000 entrepreneurs from across the country will participate in the conference.
The Prime Minister inaugurated a UDC on November 11, 2010 through a video conference from her office to Char Kukri Mukri at Bhola with the former President of New Zealand and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s administrator Helen Clark.
The state minister told the journalists that the UDCs are presently offering around 60 types of services including information for land registration, life insurance, electronic bill payment, government forms, results and etc.
Palak said the government is planning to broaden the existing UDC facilities and bring the centres closer to the rural people to reduce digital divide between the rural and urban people.
Son of Prime Minister, Mr Joy, who is also the key planner of ICT development in the country, recently presented a proposal to bring such services closer to people.
"We are hopeful of bringing digital centres to the village level," Mr Palak said adding that by 2016 the government will connect all unions with fibre optic network for access to the fastest internet facilities.
