A modern technology university, according to a report in a national daily, would to be established at Gopalganj. The education minister has already given the order to the relevant authorities to start the work to set up the seat of learning. The government, particularly its education minister should be praised for the initiative. Over the last few months, this writer has written a number of articles, pleading for opening a science and technology institute at Gopalganj and that could ultimately be upgraded to a digital university. It is the sentiment of the local people. It is surprising in about four decades since liberation, no university was established at the place of birth of the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Of about one hundred universities in Bangladesh, the greater district of Faridpur that includes Gopalganj, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Faridpur and Rajbari, has none. Does it mean there was not a single citizen with initiative in the region?
The first Digital University of Bangladesh should be established in Gopalganj and named "Mujib University of Science and Technology (MUST)" to keep the memory of the Father of the Nation alive. To give importance to research, the university could also be named, "Mujib University for Scientific and Technological Research (MUSTR)". A research-oriented science and technology university at Gopalganj, is needed to recognise the role of the Father of the Nation in the creation of independent Bangladesh. It would remind the coming generations as well as the foreign visitors about the Founding Father of Bangladesh.
The university should also commemorate Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina for initiating the politics of change and giving us the concept of Digital Bangladesh.
As the existing universities in the country do not enjoy good reputation, they need a drastic improvement. The proposal digital university at Gopalganj should teach Information and Communication Technology (ICT), biotechnology, genetic engineering, electrical and electronic engineering (EEE), electronics and telecommunications engineering (ETE), space technology, transport technology and nanotechnology.
The study of modern subjects is essential for national advancement. The university at Gopalganj should be a model seat of learning. Contrary to the impression that Bangladesh does not have teachers to teach modern subjects, it should be remembered that many Bangalis, at home or abroad, can do it.
Founder VC of Science and Technology University in rural Bangladesh, the writer is now the chairman and professor of electronics and telecommunications engineering at the Peoples University of Bangladesh, and can be reached
