CHITTAGONG, Aug 4: Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has repaired only 30 kilo metres of road out of 100 kilometres which have been damaged during the recent monsoon.
If the situation favours, the CCC will complete rest of the repairing works within next 20 days, CCC mayor M Manjur Alam said in apparent reply to the Communications Minister Obaidul Quader. The mayor called an emergency meeting of the ward councilors and senior officials and engineers at the CCC office today.
The communications minister Sunday said in Chittagong that the port city is not a suitable place for human living. He laid special emphasis on improved road connectivity, discipline in mass transport sector, cleanliness in the city and saving the Karnaphuli river from pollution.
The city is full of wastes and passers-by have to use handkerchiefs while walking along the city roads. Vast greenery is almost invisible for billboards, the minister said after inaugurating the Road Show campaign.
The mayor praised the government role in facilitating implementation of the CCC development schemes stating that the prime minister herself has shouldered the responsibility of the development works of Chittagong and sanctioned a large amount of fund for digging a new canal to solve water logging.
Regarding dilapidation of roads the mayor said excessive rainfall has damaged the roads as the canals and drains have been over-flooded and lost water containing capacity. The city corporation has undertaken massive repair works on emergency basis for the sake of the city dwellers.
"The workers had been engaged in the repair works even during the Eid vacation and five zones of the CCC engineering department are still working day and night for road repairing," he said in a statement following the meeting.
He said that the repair works are going on in three stages: putting macadam, grounding and carpeting. Due to rainfall the macadam works have been done first. By this time, three stages of road repairing have been completed on the Airport Road, Sheikh Mujib Road, Agrabad Access Road, Port Connecting Road, CDA Avenue and Dhaka Trunk Road.
The mayor said that some projects of road repairing, purchase of new asphalt plant and road carpeting have been sent to the concerned ministry. The projects are yet to be approved by the ECNEC (Executive Committee of National Economic Council).
Besides, the CCC has undertaken schemes for RCC casting and moulding anew on the Zakir Hossain Road, Mariners Road, Airport Road and Agrabad Access Road. A sum of Tk 2.00 billion has been sought from the government for those projects and CCC can start work immediately on more projects if Tk 220 million is released initially, he added.
