Diplomats briefed on undocumented Myanmar nationals

The government is working to find a reasonable solution regarding ‘undocumented’ Myanmar nationals through utilizing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Myanmar and enhancing engagement further with the neighbour. The Foreign Ministry, in this regard, briefed a group of diplomats stationed in Dhaka on Thursday highlighting the government’s plan based on the ‘National Strategic Paper’. Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque briefed the diplomats, said an official at the Foreign Ministry. Diplomats representing the USA, the UK, European Union, Canada, China, India, Malaysia and representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), were, among others, present. On September 9, the Cabinet approved the National Strategic Paper in an effort to identify, locate and deport the undocumented Myanmar citizens to their homeland. The move came as part of the government’s bid to form a coordinated working strategy to deal with the undocumented Myanmar nationals staying in Bangladesh, according to a news agency.
