Dire consequences if peaceful programmes resisted: BNP

Reaffirming that their movement will be a non-violent one, BNP Dhaka city unit convener Mirza Abbas has warned the government of dire consequences if it tries to obstruct their programmes. ‘Our movement will be non-violent and peaceful. Don’t try to obstruct it. Its consequences will not be good,’ he said while speaking with the journalists at the BNP headquarters in Nayapaltan in the city. The meeting was held in the build-up to the BNP’s rally scheduled to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday (November 8) marking the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’. Mirza Abbas, also a BNP standing committee member, alleged that the government is importing bullets from Brazil to ‘curb the non-violent movement of the opposition and to kill people’. ‘We’ll tell the government, please, don’t bring bullets to kill people. The country’s people won’t tolerate it.’ Dismissing the allegation made by Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam that Ziaur Rahman had links with the killing of four national leaders, the BNP leader said, he resorted to falsehood while making the allegation. ‘I would like to say unequivocally that Ziaur Rahman had been detained during the killing,’ he said, according to a news agency.
