Disabled not burden, train and make them skilled: PM
Thursday, 7 October 2010
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Wednesday underscored the need for training and skill development of the disabled people to turn them into assets of the nation, reports UNB.
"Don't think them (disabled persons) as burden of the country, train them, make them skilled and you will see they contribute a lot for the development of the country," she said while a delegation of the National Alliance of Disabled Peoples Organisation (NADPO) called on her at her Office in the city.
A 25- member delegation of NADPO led by its president Abdus Sattar Dular explained to the PM their problems. She gave a patient hearing to them and assured of solving their problems.
She also said that her government was sincere about the rights of the disabled people and had been working relentlessly for their wellbeing.
PM's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed the reporters after the meeting where newsmen were not allowed.
Hasina asked all to come forward to turn the disabled persons into human resources. They should not be considered a burden for the society. Disabled are the inseparable part of the society and they have the ability to contribute to the nation building efforts if their proper rights and opportunities are insured.
She recalled that the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had first introduced quota for the disabled in the government services. Her government is taking steps to reactivate the Disabled Welfare Foundation so that it can contribute to the welfare of the disabled persons.
In this connection she also said that the Foundation was created during her first tenure of government. Later BNP- Jama'at government put it under the control of NGO. "With this irresponsible act the disabled people were deprived from their desired development and a section of vested quarter gained a lot," she said.
NADPO delegation congratulated the PM for the MDG - 4 Award. They also apprised her about their situation and needs.
The PM assured of redressing the problems.
Health Advisor to the PM Dr Syed Modasser Ali, Principal Secretary to the PM MA Karim were among others present at the meeting.
