Disaster management workshop held in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Nov 24: Speakers at a workshop at the port city underscored the need to formulate an integrated working plan to tackle situation during the period of disaster at three earthquake-prone zones: Chittagong, Dhaka and Sylhet. The workshop also underlined enhancing the efficiency for implementing the plan.
The workshop styled "Disaster management of Chittagong City" was held under the integrated disaster management programme of the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management at a city hotel Sunday.
Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Shah Muhammad Aktaruddin inaugurated the workshop while the Project Manager of Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) Prof Dr Shamim Mahbubul Hoque presided.
The workshop was held under the supervision of ADPC with the financial co-operation of the UNDP, the DFID and the European Commission.
The CDA chairman underscored the need for formulating an integrated working plan for protecting the port city of Chittagong.
He expressed concern that if the port was paralysed due to any severe natural disaster, the entire country would have to suffer beyond imagination. He described the Chittagong port as the focal point of the economic activities of the country.
Representatives of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), CDA, police, navy, air force, district administration, Chittagong port, Ansar VDP and different engineering offices of the government took part in the workshop.
