Four student unions of the country's major public universities on Tuesday issued a 10-working-day ultimatum to dismiss teachers who have signed a statement in support of Sheikh Hasina - the Awami League leader sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.
The ultimatum was announced through a joint-statement by the vice presidents of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU), Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) and Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU).
According to the joint statement, a recent report by a group - "Progressive Teachers of Bangladesh Public Universities" - in favour of Hasina has left the public shocked and outraged.
Although the statement claimed signatures from 1,001 teachers across different universities, 659 names actually appeared in the signature list, according to a report published in the media.
The unions said, supporting a convicted criminal, found guilty of crimes against humanity, is a direct affront to the Supreme Court's verdict and a grave insult to those killed and injured during the July uprising.
The statement further said that some teachers' names were allegedly added to the signature list without their knowledge, or consent. The student unions urged the administrations concerned at the campuses to immediately launch an investigation to identify the teachers who signed the statement.
The unions demanded that all teachers who publicly took a stand in favour of Hasina must be removed from their university positions within the next 10 working days.
"Boycott classes and exams conducted by any teacher who has taken a stand in favour of the convicted killer Sheikh Hasina," the unions made a call to students.
Calling students to reject such teachers in all social and academic spaces, the unions said, "The combined student unions will continue the movement with students to ensure strict action from the university administrations against teachers who sided with a criminal convicted of crimes against humanity."
