The organisers of the 15th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF-2010) hope that they would draw the highest ever spot order worth Tk 300 million (30 crore) at the end of the annual fair.
Fair Director M Abdur Rahman told the FE, "We have got immense response from visitors this year and we are expecting to achieve the highest amount of spot order worth Tk 300 million."
"Last year the amount was around Tk 199 million as it was held in an unstable political condition and the presence of visitors was poor."
He said, "The fair has run smoothly except an unexpected clash on last Friday (January 29). As that was just a stray incident, on the next day a huge number of people visited the fair."
Mr Rahman said the seven-day extension of the fair has created huge enthusiasm among visitors to the fair and I believe the stall owners also are happy.
The stall owners at the fair demanded time expansion as foggy weather seriously interrupted the sales in the first half of the fair.
Owner of M/S Lucky Jamdani Weaving Factory Md Salahuddin said, "The extension of fair period has created a big opportunity as I am going to confirm export to India of 40,000 pieces of Jamdani sarees worth $ 120,000."
"Though my regular sales are in between Tk 15,000 to Tk 20,000, I have achieved 3 orders from India of 6,800 pieces of Tagail sarees and 5,000 pieces of Jamdani sarees. There might be another order from England to export of 2,500 pieces of Jamdani kamizes," he added.
AKH Enayet Hossain, assistant commissioner of customs, excise and VAT, Mirpur division said, "The customs authority has collected a total of Tk 13.1 million until Thursday including 7.0 million for tax at source and 6.1 million for trade VAT while the amount was Tk 10.4 million last year."
"At the end of the fair the total sales might reach Tk 500 million," he said.
Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice-Chairman Shahab Ullah said, "Everyday around 50,000-70,000 people visit the fair while the number crosses 100,000 on holidays."
The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and the Commerce Ministry have organised the month-long DITF-2010 where a wide range of products including aluminum utensils, leather and leather goods, footwear, handicrafts, agro-based products, light-engineering products, woven garments, knitwear, jute and jute products, frozen foods and bicycles are put on display.
Besides those, home textiles, household appliances, ceramic tableware, pharmaceuticals, textile products, chemical products, machinery, agriculture and gardening equipment, chemical and allied products are also on sale.
Some 476 national and international companies are participating in the fair including 28 pavilions coming from 10 different countries.
The major foreign participants are India, Pakistan, China, Sri Lanka, Iran, Malaysia, Turkey and Thailand.
The buyers from China, Iran, Italy, UK, Sweden, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan are visiting the month-long fair looking for Bangladesh's leather items, ceramic ware, jute products and textile products, said EPB sources.
