Diversified agriculture gaining popularity in Narsingdi char area

NARSINGDI, Feb 08 (BSS): Hundreds of poor char people living in 12 remote char unions of Narsingdi Sadar and Raipura upazilas have successfully overcome their poverty through multifarious agriculture.
Sources with the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said before taking up the diversified agriculture as their means of subsistence at least half of them were in abject poverty in the erosion prone sandy chars of the Meghna, Brahamaputra and Arial Khan river basins in Narsingdi district. But, now they are leading a good life.
The sources said most of the char people here have achieved success and overcome poverty through farming paddy, groundnut, sweet potato and various vegetables in the vast tracts of sandy barren char lands.
Besides, a number of poor people achieved self-reliance through rearing livestock, poultry birds and ducks and also fish farming in the river.
DAE deputy director Latafat Hossain told the news agency that the department is providing training to the char people on paddy, groundnut, sweet potato and various vegetables farming.
Beside, the department provided training to the char people on livestock rearing on poultry and fish farming.
He said, as a result, the people of char villages overcame poverty and have brought about a revolutionary change in their life.
