Diverting attention from the Rohingya?

Tuesday, 15 September 2020

The reported movement of Myanmar troops near the border with Bangladesh is definitely a suspicious act. This happens at a time when two Myanmar soldiers confessed to killing and committing arson againstRohingya Muslims in Rakhine province in 2017. Bangladesh has been consistently demanding repatriation of the Myanmar nationals numbering more than a million who were given shelter in Cox's Bazar.
By the latest move, the Myanmar authorities might have tried to divert attention of the international community from repatriation to urgency of defusing tensions along the border. Dhaka should not fall into any trap by Myanmar and instead continue talks with Myanmar, other influential countries and international community to address the Rohingya issue.
