DMCH performs 1st bone marrow transplant

The country’s first-ever bone marrow transplantation has been successfully performed at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), raising a hope among local cancer patients. Health Minister Mohammad Nasim announced this at a press conference at DMCH conference room on Monday. A team of doctors, led by Bone Marrow Transplant and Haematology and Haemato-oncology Department head Prof MA Khan and Bimalangshu R Dey, a Bangladeshi doctor working in the Massachusetts General Hospital in the US, carried out the transplantation. The team successfully transplanted bone marrow of a 52-year-old cancer patient, whose identity was not disclosed. It was told at the press conference that patients will be provided free treatment at the Bone Marrow Transplantation Centre over the next three months. He said from now on Thalassemia patients will also get treatment. State Minister for Health Jahid Malik, Director General of Health Directorate Dr Deen Mohammad Noorul Haque were, among others, present at the press conference, according to a news agency.
