DNCC officer suspended over staged clean-up campaign

FE Report | Tuesday, 19 March 2019

Additional Waste Management Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) SM Shafiqur Rahman was suspended on Monday over his purported instruction to litter the clean roads with scraps of garbage during a programme of the mayor at Tejgaon.
Mr Shafiqur, an executive engineer, was removed from his duty temporarily at the instruction of DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam.
A work supervisor, namely Md Salahuddin, who was assigned there by a waste management division contractor was also relieved of his duty for his involvement in the incident.
The DNCC organised a 'Special Clean-up Campaign and Wall Painting' programme at Mayor Annisul Huq Road at Satrasta of Tejgaon area on Sunday, marking the 99th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
It was found that a staged campaign was conducted by the staff of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), littering scraps of garbage in already cleaned areas, ahead of the inauguration of the clean-up campaign by the mayor.
The incident was captured on camera which soon went viral on the social media, drawing flak from different quarters.
Although the Mayor Annisul Huq Road and adjacent streets were cleaned up on Sunday morning, some stuff were found littering several spots on the road so that they could be cleaned again during the inauguration of the campaign.
DNCC has formed a three-member probe committee in this regard with Chief Estate Officer Aminul Islam as its head. The committee will submit the report to the mayor within seven working days.
