The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) will be able to recruit required manpower soon, as the concerned ministry is likely to give approval to its recruitment proposals this month. "We have sent proposals to the Ministry of Establishment for appointing fresh manpower to gear up our anti-adulteration drives," Md Abul Hossain Mian, director general (DG) of DNCRP, told the FE Friday. "We are hopeful that the ministry will be able to send the proposals to the secretary of committee on development this month for finalising the recruitment process." After the final approval of the committee, the proposals will go to the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) for recruitment of the manpower. "We have to recruit at least 233 staff in the first phase, and accordingly we sent our proposals to the ministry." He said apart from recruiting necessary manpower, the directorate is likely to get some vital logistic supports from the government within the next few months. The DNCRP DG also said the directorate is continuing market monitoring to check the unscrupulous traders from making windfall profits through adulteration of food items and depriving the consumers by adopting various means. "DNCRP has been maintaining anti-adulteration drives despite shortage of manpower. Once the recruitment proposals are finalised and the recruitment of manpower is completed, then it will be possible to speed up drives against the unscrupulous traders," he also said. "Except the weekend, we carry out regular drives against the unscrupulous traders at different markets and shops across the city. Since the inception of the directorate, the directorate has realised above Tk 10 million as fines till date," Abul Hossain said. The DNCRP DG said to expedite anti-adulteration drives, the organisation will set up its offices at all the divisions this year. Besides, the plan of establishing district-level offices will also be materialised next year. The National Consumers Rights Protection Act 2009 has paved the way to the formation of DNCRP with specific objectives to protect the consumers' rights.
