A physician of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) was beaten and injured critically Saturday allegedly by his rival colleagues at the country's highest seat of medicare, reports UNB.
The victim was Dr Nazrul Islam, an activist of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), the physician front of the opposition BNP.
The police said two young doctors named Apu and Sumon went to the Urology Department of the medical university at about 11:30am and asked Dr Saiful Islam about Dr Nazrul.
"Sensing danger, Dr Saiful Islam went out and locked his chamber hiding Dr Nazrul inside," says a spot report quoting witnesses.
"But, deeming Dr Nazrul's presence in the room, the two physicians stormed into the room and beat him up, leaving him critically injured," says the report.
Hearing about the incident, the university Superintendent, Prof Jamal Uddin Khalifa, rushed to spot and rescued him.
Dr Nazrul was rushed to the BSMMU operation theatre as he suffered severe head injuries and bruises all over his body.
After the filing of a case at the Shahabagh police station, the police arrested four physicians in connection with the attack. They are Dr Sumon, Dr Apu, Dr Bari and Dr Maruf.
Conflicts between doctors affiliated to rival political camps have reportedly marred health services at the medical university over the years.
