The Department of Fisheries (DoF) has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock for preparing a National Shrimp Policy (NSP) to ensure growth of the country's shrimp industry, official said Wednesday.

DoF has taken the initiative to ease the contradictions between landowners and leaseholders involved in the country's 14 southwestern districts where shrimps are cultivated mostly.

"Our main objective for preparing the NSP is to organise the fundamentals of an environment friendly integrated shrimp farming," said a senior official of DoF on condition of anonymity.

The NSP will resolve the misunderstanding of landowners and leaseholders, as it will provide a clear guideline on shrimp farming, he said.

According to DoF, the policy will ensure that the shrimp farmer gets their legal rights.

"We hope the policy will give the farmers a clear guide line when to cultivate shrimps and when to grow paddy on their land," source affirmed.

The policy will have a guideline on loans to be provided by banks and NGOs on easy terms and conditions.

The policy will mention various techniques to be used for processing so as to ensure increased production and export.

The policy is also likely to include the setting up of a training center to produce skilled manpower for this industry and a Shrimp Resource Centre (SRC), the official said.

The policy will also mention about shrimp production and marketing, export, shrimp hatchery and development strategies.

More than 2.0 million people are directly and indirectly involved in the shrimp cultivation spread around 1.72 million hectares of land, source informed.
