Dogs smuggled to Korean ship at Mongla

KHULNA, Mar 3: About fifty dogs have been smuggled to a foreign ship at Mongla port recently.

Sources said the Korean flag carrier ship 'MV Great Hope' had anchored at the Mongla Port for unloading urea fertiliser recently.

Dog meat is very alluring food for the crew and sailors of Korean ships. So they tried to collect it, though the supply of dog as food is fully prohibited in the country.

However, a smuggler syndicate collected over fifty dogs from different areas, strangled them and supplied those to the ship in gunny bags Sunday night.

Source also said the dogs were supplied at the rate of Tk 1,500 to Tk 2,000 per piece. Some times they are exchanged with valuable goods like whisky, fuel oil, iron roof etc.

The customs officials, however, denied the matter.
