Dollar down vs. yen

Wednesday, 24 September 2014

The dollar fell against the yen in Asian trade Wednesday, with the greenback unable to recoup early morning losses triggered by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s remarks that he’s cautious about the yen’s recent weakness. The dollar USDJPY, -0.25% was at ¥108.52 compared with ¥108.89 late Tuesday in New York. In early Asia trade, the greenback met a bout of selling after Abe reportedly said he wants to be cautious about the impact from the recent weakening of the yen, sending the dollar to as low as ¥108.46. Abe told a group of reporters on his trip to the US that a weaker yen ‘has both positive and negative impacts. I would like to watch carefully (how the yen’s weakness is having the impact on) the regional economies and small, mid-sized companies,’ according to Kyodo News.
