FE Report
Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd. has installed a limited number of pre-paid gas meters on experimental basis at Mohammadpur and Lalmatia areas in the capital, official said. If the 1-2 months observation period yields positive result then more such meters will be installed in phases, officials confirmed. The institute of information and communication technology (IICT) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) will assemble the meters with local as well as imported parts and components. Smart cards needed to charge credits will also be imported but the software will be developed by IICT, said its director Prof. Lutful Kabir. Titas Gas Managing Director M Abdul Aziz Khan told FE that about 106 pre-paid gas meters have been installed under a pilot project. Consumers will have to pay Tk 5.16 for every cubic meter of gas and the amount has to be paid in advance at rending stations with the help of smart cards. Experts believe that use of pre-paid gas meters will eliminate misuse just as system loss reduced considerably in areas where pre-paid electric meters have been installed.
