Domestic violence in Bangladesh

Wednesday, 20 May 2015

Domestic violence and abuse can happen anywhere and to anyone, yet the problem is often overlooked, bypassed, or even denied. It refers to any abuse-including physical, emotional, sexual, or financial-involving people in the same household. This is especially true when the abuse is psychological, rather than physical. Noticing and acknowledging the signs of an abusive relationship are the first step for its elimination. No one should live in fear of the person they love.
Domestic violence is an inescapable problem in Bangladesh and presents a huge threat to the security of girls and women. In a recent study, more than half of married women aged 15-49 interviewed reported that they had experienced some form of physical and/or sexual violence from their husbands.
Surprisingly, more than one-third of both men and women believe that men are justified in beating their wives in specific circumstances, such as altercations. The practice of dowry, a lower age at marriage, and poverty are all associated with women's higher likelihood of experiencing and condoning violence. Adolescent girls are often victims of 'eve teasing' or sexual harassment. In one of its most extreme forms, violence against women takes the form of acid attacks. Sadly, suicide is also common among girls aged between 14 and 17.
Time has come for us to raise our voice against abuse of hapless girls. We must understand that voicing our concern will be the first step towards eliminating these evils from society permanently.
