Donors, NGOs join hands with govt in relief operation

Sunday, 5 August 2007

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and donor agencies already engaged in relief operation are likely to intensify their humanitarian work watching the intensity of the current floods across the country.
"Our member-organisations are already working in 10 flood-hit districts," NGO Federation Director M Tajul Islam told UNB Saturday evening.
He said the board members of the NGO Federation would sit in a couple of days to review the flood situation and step up the relief and rehabilitation activities if the flood situation further worsened.
The Federation has nearly 900 members throughout the country. "We have already asked our concerned members to join relief operations in the worst affected areas and they are working," Tajul said.
During the last floods, he recalled, the Federation distributed Tk 5.0 million donated by BRAC through its members.
An official of UNDP said the UN agency is now implementing UK's $2.5 million (Tk 170 million) immediate scheme in aid for providing food, water, shelter and medicines.
The amount was given for 50,000 flood-hit people in 10 worst affected districts and special assistance through the Chars Livelihoods Programme.
