Don\\\'t allow overloaded vehicles to ply roads: PM

Stressing the importance of properly maintaining the country’s roads and highways, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday asked the authorities concerned to strictly monitor so that overloaded trucks and other vehicles cannot ply the roads. She gave the directive while formally inaugurated two highways, one road and one bridge in different parts of the country through a videoconferencing from her official residence Ganabhaban. The newly completed development projects are a 16-km long road upgraded to a four-lane highway in the divisional city of Rangpur, newly constructed 10.50-km long Birulia-Ashulia highway and Birulia bridge and the long-awaited Thanchi-Alikadam road under Bandarban district constructed at about 3500 feet high from the sea level. During the videoconference with Dhaka Divisional Commissioner’s office, the Prime Minister said with the inauguration of the newly constructed Birulia-Ashulia highway and Ashulia bridge, the road communication from Dhaka to respective areas will be eased removing traffic jam significantly. She said steps have been taken to upgrade other highways, including Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, to four-lane ones to ensure improved communication system in the country, according to a news agency.
