Don't do anything that can bring parties, govt face to face: Tofail
Sunday, 6 July 2008
Awami League presidium member Tofail Ahmed Saturday urged the caretaker government to refrain from doing anything that could bring the political parties and the government face to face, reports UNB.
'Media reports say that people are being recruited under the banner of a special organisation for the upazila elections. I want to warn the government, if it wants to take the country to a planned destination, the consequences will be very bad,' Tofail said.
He was addressing the conference of Dhaka district Jubo League at a city hotel.
Presided over by district Jubo League president Shafiul Azam Khan Barku, the conference was addressed, among others, by AL organising secretary Abdul Mannan and office secretary Abdul Mannan Khan.
'Caretaker government is called a nonpartisan government. But for its some activities people have started questioning its neutrality. The government should not do anything that will bring it and the political parties face to face,' Tofail said.
He urged the government to fully lift the state of emergency before all elections.
Tofail said no election would be accepted by the people under the emergency law. 'The state of emergency cannot ensure a free and fair election,' he told the conference.
He said the local-body elections should be arranged after the parliamentary polls as demanded by people.
About the allegation of the BNP-led four-party alliance that AL president Sheikh Hasina was freed following a secret deal, Tofail said it is not AL but the BNP and its allies that believe in politics of compromise and secret dealings.
