Downpours submerge parts of port city

CHITTAGONG, June 23 (BSS): Incessant downpours for the past two days submerged parts of the port city of Chittagong
The rain initially appeared as a welcome shower to relieve residents of sufferings from scorching heat.
The light to moderate downpour started on midday of Monday and continued still this evening while the Met office recorded 112.3 millimetres rainfall in 24 hours ending at 3pm today.
Meteorologists also forecast light to moderate rainfall in Chittagong division in the next 24 hours.
But downpour submerged many parts of the city including Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar, Sholokbohor, Bakalia, Number-2 Gate area, Muradpur and Agrabad inundating houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions.
Mechanised vehicles stopped moving in areas under water while many of those were seen stuck in waters with their engines downed in knee deep waters mounting sufferings of thousands of people.
