Dozen more haats in border areas

Sunday, 15 February 2015

It was reported in the media that the government was scrutinising a proposal for opening 12 more border haats with neighboring India to boost bilateral trade between the two countries. There are a few border haats operating at different points of the border. A trader can trade US$ 100 worth of commodities, like vegetables, fruits, fruit juice, eggs, dry fishes, chickens, wooden furniture, soap, potato, processed foods, spices, bamboo, bamboo grass, broomstick, home textiles, garments, melamine products, agriculture tools etc.
The trading list should include cow, bull, oxen, goat, lamb etc. as those are in short supply in Bangladesh and rural people need those to rear. To do so, trading should be increased to US$300 for each trader a day.
I would therefore like to urge the authority concerned to include cattle heads in border trade and enhance the existing trading limits.
