Monday, 10 November 2014
The non-permanent employees and staff of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) took to the streets on Monday to press for their 20-point charter of demands, including nationalisation of their jobs. Scores of non-permanent employees and staff of the DPDC gathered in front of Bidyut Bhaban in the city on Monday morning. They chanted various slogans in support of their demands in front of the office and later held a rally there blocking the road, halting vehicular movement. The rally which started around 10:15am, led to serious traffic congestion. Moreover, the ruling party’s labour wing Sramik League tuned unity with the agitating DPDC employees after half-an-hour and joined the rally in front of the power office which led to extending the gridlock farther. The traffic on the road returned to normal after the rally ended around 12:00noon. Speakers at the rally vowed to continue the agitation until their 20-point-demand is met by the government. DPDC unit Bidyut Sramik League leader Fazlul Haque presided over the meeting, according to a news agency.
