Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury met the Speakers of the House of Commons and the House of Lords in the British Parliament.
She met Speaker of the House of Commons Rt. Hon John Bercow, MP and Speaker of the House of Lords Baroness D'Souza Thursday, according to a news agency.
Both the Speakers congratulated her on being elected as the woman Speaker of Bangladesh for the second time saying that this is the visible indication of women empowerment in Bangladesh.
Dr Sharmin briefed the British Speakers on the parliamentary committee system in Bangladesh and said the committees work very effectively as there is a scope of consultation between the legislators and the civil society during passing any bill or enactment of a law in Parliament.
Bangladesh is the role model of women’s economic and political empowerment, she said adding that the Leader of the House, the Speaker, Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the House are women in Bangladesh Parliament.
She also had separate meetings with British MPs Keith Vaz and Lord Sheikh.
The British Speakers and the MPs stressed the need for further strengthening parliamentary relations between the two countries.
Earlier on Wednesday, Dr Sharmin was conferred upon the Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of Essex at the Graduation Ceremony 2014.
