Dr Yunus's call to interfere an act of treason: FM

FE Report | Wednesday, 24 July 2024

Foreign Minister (FM) Dr Hasan Mahmud has alleged that Dr Yunus has committed the crime of treason by urging the foreigners to interfere in the internal affairs of Bangladesh.
The Nobel Laureate issued a statement over the recent anti-quota protest of the students, urging the foreigners to interfere in Bangladesh's affairs.
"It is an act of treason," the minister said while talking to the reporters on Tuesday.
Dr Yunus did not mention anything about the heinous attack on lives and properties of the country's people by perpetrators, he further said.
It may be mentioned that Dr Yunus left home for France on Monday - at a time when the country is under curfew.
According to sources, he took permission of the court prior to his travel, as trial is going on against him in connection with a case on violation of labour rights.
The foreign minister added that Bangladesh missions abroad were asked to counter all sorts of rumours over the present situation, as certain quarters were trying to tarnish the country's image by spreading propaganda.
He also hoped that the situation would be normal very soon.
UNB adds: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has communicated with the Indian government through diplomatic channel, noting that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks on social media could create confusion among people.
"With due respect to (West Bengal) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, I would like to say, we have excellent relations with her. We have deep relations. But her remarks created confusion to some extent and there is scope to be misled," Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said.
Hasan said that the foreign ministry has informedthe India government through a diplomatic note regarding the issue.
The foreign minister made the remark when a journalist asked for his comments on what Mamata shared from her X (formerly known as Twitter) handle.
