The Advisory Council of the Interim Government has given its final approval to the draft of the 'Supreme Court Judges' Appointment Ordinance 2025'.
The council approved the draft in its meeting held on Thursday, according to a press release issued by Md Shafiqul Islam, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Supreme Court.
It is expected that the draft of the ordinance will be finalised soon, subject to the routine vetting of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department, according to the press release.
It is also anticipated that the phased implementation of the Judicial Reform Roadmap announced by the Chief Justice will play a crucial role in bringing transparency to the judicial process and establishing justice in the country.
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed took various initiatives to improve the quality of the country's judiciary immediately after assuming his office on August 11 last year.
Continuing with this effort, on September 21, 2024, the Chief Justice announced a roadmap for the modernisation of the judiciary.
He emphasised the formation of an Independent Judicial Appointment Council to appoint judges in the higher judiciary, among other things, in the said roadmap, and urged the Interim Government to enact the necessary legislation in this regard.
Furthermore, on October 28, 2024, the Bangladesh Supreme Court submitted a proposal to the Law Ministry after conducting a detailed research on the laws, rules and regulations, decisions of the High Courts, customs, and related issues related to the appointment of judges of the High Courts of different countries around the world.
