Drastic fall in power generation resulting in about 8 hours of loadshedding in city
Tuesday, 23 March 2010
The power generation fell drastically Monday as 125mw Barapukuria coal-fired power plant unit-1 was forced to shut down following a water leakage developed in the plant, reports UNB.
Besides, power generation declined by about 850mw in the absence of adequate gas supply to other power plants, officials admitted when pointed to frequent and extended period of load shedding across the country.
The Barapukuria plant has two generation units each having capacity of 125 MW. The Unit-1 was shut down on emergency basis early today, a top official of the state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) said .
He said the country has been generating between 4000-4100MW during the peak hours for last couple of weeks. But on Monday, the generation capacity came down to below 3800MW.
"We've to reduce our generation capacity by about 850MW alone for the gas crisis," he added.
According to the PDB and DPDC sources, the greater Dhaka city received about 1220MW at 6 pm against the demand of 1800MW. As a result, the DPDC and DESCO have to go for huge load shedding to cover the gap between the demand and supply.
Many areas of the city are experiencing frequent and extended load shedding.
