RAJSHAHI, Nov 15: Due to political unrest at Nandigram of West Bengal, India, the import of commodities through Sona Masjid landport had declined drastically during the last couple of days. As a result, earning of revenue of the landport fell short taka 40 lakh during the last two days.
Sona Masjid sources said, due to unrest at Nandigram, the import of goods through Sona Masjid had come down to 30 per cent during the last two days( Monday and Tuesday).
The sources further said, there was a negative impact on revenue earning of the landport when the Indian government put a ban on export of onion from the last week of October and the import of sugar from India remained suspended following the fall of price of sugar in the local markets.
The Indian government also imposed ban on export of pulse (lentil, mungbean and kalai) for the last three months and in the recent days, India has also imposed a ban on the export of rice to Bangladesh.
As a result of ban on export of various consumer goods from India the revenue earnings of Sona Masjid landport marked a downward trend for the last couple of months but the recent political unrest at Nandigram has pushed down the revenue earnings to the lowest.
During last Monday and Tuesday, 160 trucks laden with Indian goods like green chilli, tomato, maize, red-pepper and fruits entered into Sona Masjid landport while on November 10 and November 11 a total of 369 trucks laden with various imported goods came to Sona Masjid from India.
