Monday, 2 July 2007

RANGPUR, July 1 (BSS): Revenue earnings from Hilli Land Port (HLP) under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur marked a drastic fall by over 20 per cent than the fixed target during fiscal of 2006-2007, official sources said Sunday.
The HLP customs authorities could earn only Tk 80,52,45,171 as revenue against the fixed target of Tk 1.01 billion (101.50 crore) during the last fiscal that is 20.66 per cent lower than the fixed target, they said.
Some local businessmen blamed massive corruption of the customs officials and employees of HLP in connivance with some unscrupulous businessmen during the first half of the last fiscal and increasing export values of some items by the Indian exporters, are the main reasons behind the drastic fall in revenue earning at the HLP.
Despite massive corruption of the same quarters, the revenue earnings exceeded by 21.37 per cent of the fixed target during the previous fiscal of 2005- 2006 when the HLP earned Tk. 815.6 million (81.56 crore) revenue against the fixed target of Tk 672 million (67.20 crore).
While revenue earning target could not be achieved due to massive corruption and it stood at over Tk 563.3 million (56.33 crore) against the fixed target of Tk. 660 million (66 crore) during the fiscal of 2004-2005 in the port when the achievement was 14.66 per cent less than that of the fixed target, local sources said.
Revenue earning was also affected from the land port due to ban on the import of most of the items trough the port in recent years, the sources said.
After imposing of the Emergency, corruption and irregularities at the HLP came down to the lowest ever level.
Most of the unfair businessmen who earned millions of illegal money through evading taxes, using false LCs and other illegal means in connivance with the customs officials over the years, are not importing goods from India and are absconding, local people said.
