CHITTAGONG, Sept 12 (UNB): The government will soon set up offices of the Department of Environment (DoE) at district level to monitor the cases of environment pollution and hill cutting across the country.
"Works on setting up environment department offices at district level outside divisional cities will begin soon".
State Minister for Forest and Environment Hasan Mahmud told reports Saturday at a views-exchange meeting at the local Circuit House.
He said the DoE offices will be set up in all the old districts and three new ones, namely, Narayanganj, Narsingdi and Gazipur, in the first phase.
Hasan Mahmud said 400 people, including seven magistrates, would be recruited to strengthen the activities of the department.
"Mobile courts will operate across the country to check environment pollution and hill cutting after recruitment of the new manpower," he added.
Later, Hasan Mahmud visited different hill areas in the city, including Kushumbagh, Khulsi and Lalkhanbazar and asked the authorities concerned to evict the structures made by cutting hills.
Talking to reporters, he said stern actions would be taken against those involved in hill cutting whatever be their identity and influence.
He also warned that action also would be taken against government agencies if they cut hills without approval from the DoE.
Hasan Mahmud said the department and other government agencies will make frequent visits to hills to put an end to hill cutting.
He also said 7.58 hectares of land across the country will be brought under tree plantation to ensure the ecological balance.
