Driver, helper get life for raping girl in moving bus

A bus driver and his assistant have been awarded life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a court in Manikganj district for molesting a girl in a moving bus more than a year ago. Judge AKM Mostofa Dewan of the District and Sessions Judge’s court handed down the punishment on Thursday afternoon in presence of the convicts. The judge also fined driver Dipu Miah, 32, and helper Kashem Ali, 26, Tk 50,000 each, in default, more three years RI. In addition, Dipu Miah was handed down five years’ RI and penalised Tk 5,000 on charge of attempting to violate the hapless girl in the bus. The driver will have to serve one year more in jail if he failed to pay the fine. However, the imprisonment of Dipu on the two separate charges will run concurrently. According to the prosecution the duo molested a teenaged girl in a running bus on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj on January 24 last year. A case was filed with Manikganj Sadar Police Station accusing Dipu of making multiple attempts to rape the girl but his helper violated her in front of the driver. Police in separate drives arrested the accused from Nabinagar under Ashulia of Savar in the outskirts of Dhaka city the following day, according to a news agency.
